As most of you won’t have had a wedding hair trial before (or ‘bridal preview’ as it’s sometimes called nowadays), I thought I’d give you some pointers to help you get the most out of the experience. Here’s what to expect at your wedding hair trial…

Why is a Wedding Hair Trial Important?

First things first, why bother with a trial at all? Well, your trial is an opportunity to discuss your options with your stylist and work out specific details. It gives you a chance to express any concerns you may have and figure out which hairstyle will make you look and feel your best on your wedding day.

When Should I Have My Wedding Hair Trial?

Personally, I think a trial 6-8 weeks before the wedding is ideal. By this point, you should have your dress, so we’ll know what neckline we’re working with. Although I don’t advise trying too many hair styles, you can have more than one trial if you want. Bear in mind, there will be an additional cost for this.

How Do I Prepare?

I would strongly encourage you to have a haircut just before your trial. This way, your hair will be at your desired length, giving you a real sense of how it will look once styled. If you regularly colour your hair, I’d also discuss the timings for this with your hairdresser. It’s usually best to have it done closer to your wedding date.

Wash your hair the night before your trial, not the morning of as this can affect the way it’s styled. I’d also recommend drying it with a hairdryer rather than air drying. Try not to straighten it or overload it with products and never arrive with wet hair unless your stylist has explicitly asked you to.

How Will We Find the Right Style?

Bring your smart phone or tablet with you, loaded with images of your desired style so you can go through them with me and explain the things you like, love and dislike. I have an eye for picking out certain details you’re drawn to from all your inspiration and I’ll be super honest about what’s achievable. There’s almost always a way to tweak things to suit you, your hair and your dress.

Pinterest can be helpful if you’re looking for ideas. I’d also recommend scrolling through your chosen hairstylist’s gallery or Instagram feed. There’s so much inspiration online, it’s easy to become overwhelmed, so to avoid this it’s a good idea to refine your search and be specific. At first, you want to look for styles featuring the same hair colour, texture and length as your own. There’s actually a big difference between how certain styles look on blonde or brunette hair. For example, texture and details such as braids can get lost in darker hair.

If you’ve looked at so many photos of wedding hair, you’re now totally confused about what you want, DON’T PANIC!! We’ll discuss your overall wedding vibe, look at your dress, and decide on a style that will suit you and the wedding you’re planning.

Anything Else I Should Know?

You’ll need at least an hour for the trial itself. I’ll want to know all about the big day, see the ring and hear your proposal story!

Be open and honest during your trial. I won’t be offended – promise! I want your hair to be perfect, so communication is key. Be sure to tell me any musts i.e. you want to hide your ears, you have a cowlick, you want your fringe down etc. Remember to bring any hair accessories and your veil too. This is important as I’ll need to know where we’ll be placing these on the day so I can style your hair around it.

Finally, I’d suggest attending your trial alone. Not all wedding related appointments are an opportunity to get your bridesmaids together. At your trial, the most important voice is yours and the one I want to focus on. It can be overwhelming for both of us if there are too many opinions being thrown around. If you do want some company, I would select one person you can trust to help you stay true to what you want.
